INFORMATION ABOUT DISSIMILIS IN CUBA
In Cuba, children and youth with learning disabilities and special needs, study in Special Education Schools. We have 260 special schools and 27 institutions for people with more severe disabilities.
HOW DISSIMILIS STARTED IN CUBA
In December 1995, the 26th International Red Cross Conference was celebrated in Geneva. In the official opening a group of Dissimilis had a performance, and our General Secretary Luis Foyo, who was assisting the Conference, left very impressed about what he saw. He got in contact with Dissimilis and they provided us with some music books with the system.
In 1997, a music teacher in institution “Calixto Díaz” in Las Tunas started on his own initiative, using the manual of the Dissimilis system. The results were so encouraging that we decided to expand the system. The project began: Dissimilis teachers came every year during 4 years and they trained 121 music teachers. Music groups were organized in all our 14 provinces.
FESTIVALS
Cuban groups participated in 2 international festivals: June 2004 in Oslo we were represented by a musical group integrated with children from 4 provinces
June 2007, in Dominican Republic we were represented by both, a musical group and a dancing group with children from Granma and Guantánamo
We also celebrate annual national festivals with groups from all the 14 provinces.
